Is a security deposit receipt legally required?
It depends on your state and local law — several states require landlords to give tenants a written receipt for the deposit, and others require escrow or interest disclosures. This tool produces a clean, professional receipt; it is general information, not legal advice. Check your state rules or a local attorney for your exact obligations.
How is this different from a rent receipt?
A rent receipt proves monthly rent was paid. A deposit receipt proves a refundable security deposit was received at move-in and records where it is held. Different document, different moment — landlords usually need both. (Our Rent Receipt Batch Generator covers the monthly side.)
Is this the same as a move-out itemization?
No. A move-out itemization lists deductions from the deposit when the tenant leaves. This receipt is the opposite end of the tenancy: proof of what was received at the start. Deductions at move-out must be documented separately.
What should a deposit receipt include?
Landlord and tenant names, property address and unit, deposit amount (in numbers and in words), date received, payment method, where the deposit is held, and signature lines. This tool puts all of that on one page.
